Broken timing belt on 960 volvo - is it certain that engine was destroyed? 900 1993

I have a 1993 960 4 dr with 132,000 miles on it. The timing belt broke (it had been changed at 78,000 miles so was overdue, however, mechanic thought it was caused by a gear that was binding since when he took off cover to timing belt he felt that one gear turned tightly - I am not sure which one at this point since it just happened - additionally the belt was not worn nor cracked)

The mechanic is convinced that the engine pistons were ruined. However, when the belt broke the only sound was the snap of the belt then silence. There was no sound of pistons bending or metal on metal. My question is this: could the engine be okay? Is it worth opening it up and checking or putting a new timing belt in (once the 'sticking' gear issue is resolved) before investing $1,000 in new (used) engine and $800 to install?

Thanks! The car is in good shape otherwise - clean interior, body good, new shocks, brakes, and exhaust (including catalytic convertor). I am considering selling but probably could not get more than $2,000 if engine is not functioning.

I would appreciate any feedback/ advice!! THANKS!!
