Volvo AC Systems 200

I love my Volvos, all four of them. They are like children. They bring me immense joy and occasionally periods stress. The children have names 'cause we are odd folks in the first place. There is Blue a '75 242, Agnes a '78 245, Snowflake an '88 240 and Isabel a '94 960. Like children who at times work together to get into mischief I think the children have been conspiring while parked in the garage to drive me out of my mind. Three of them have all developed A/C issues with in the last 2 weeks. Only the oldest child, due to his maturity elected not to play this awful trick on dear old dad. Now three compressors, three dryers/accumulators, 3 expansion valves, 1 condenser, and 7.5 pounds of Freon later they are all back to behaving again.

I can't imagine the expense of these repairs without my trusty Haynes AC manual, a good set of gauges, and a good parts source. While I was at it I decided to convert the only child yet to be converted to R134A. The 245's York compressor had a build date of 5/78. As the second owner I know it is the original system. In the past I always thought of AC work as a mystery practiced by "the high priest" of auto repair. But the Brickboard taught me that it is not necessary to spend thousands of your hard earned dollars to worship in the local houses of AC. I figure I conservatively saved $1,500 dollars by doing my homework and using the archives here on the Brickboard.

Even though our children may misbehave occasionally, we love them for who they are and what joy they can bring us. But unlike my real kids my Volvos never seem to talk back.

Happy Motoring and thanks for all the help I receive daily from you all.
