I'm wondering if the failure to start may not be related to the power stage modules. The symptoms sound similar to those you would experience if you have the "lawn mower syndrome" - i.e., stuck valves that do not fully close and that prevent compression in some cylinders.

There's information about this in the faq on Sticking Valves, including diagnosis (compression test), prevention, and recovery.
