745 steering issue 700 1988

Now that winter's gone and the roads are clear again, I can get to tracking down Sigue's (88 745GLE) latest thing. The steering has picked up a strange "variable effort" feeling--it's stiff, then light, then stiff while turning, in either direction. Boost is inconsistent throughout the turning radius. He's also started chewing up the left front tire--irregular wear around the outside tread. My gut is telling me it's a tie rod, but I don't recall the inrregular boost from the PS the last time Sigue needed tie rods. Any thoughts?
