Alternator woes-Help 200

Did you notice the ground wire connection on the original alternator? Goes from one of the through-case screws (lower left when viewed from the rear of the unit) to one of the bolts holding the alt's mounting bracket to the engine. A lot of current (the alternator's entire charging current) goes through this wire, so it needs to be a fairly large gauge, with the terminals properly crimped to the ends, and then firmly attached at either end under the respective screws/bolts. In other words, virtually no electrical resistance anywhere.

Smoke is a real bad sign. As we British car owners say - Lucas electrical stuff works great as long as you keep the smoke INSIDE the wires - however, once it starts to get out....

Are you sure you connected the battery and warning light wires to their proper terminals? If so, it sounds like the new alt. was bad right out of the box.
