Trailer HItch Wiriging Setups? 900

I presently waiting for the "correct" trailer hitch to arrive and I've already purchase thes draw-tite taillight converter for the 900 series volvos.

I've also decided to junk my old 86 740 (see my other postings in the 700 forum if you need something). Anyway, I was checking out the cargo section when I notices a peculiar pulg adapted under the 740s rear bumper. Turns out to be be a taillight wiring setup. I examined the wiring in teh cargo section a sure enough, this car used to have a tow hitch with the wiring. Tow hitch was gone before I bought the car, but they left the wiring. I went a head and pulled the wiring setup. Looks OEM so I migt install it on the 940.

This raises some questions. The plug on the 740 is a sort of round, hexagonal plug with a hinged cover and three snap connector round prongs. There was no voltage stabilitizer box, they were wired directly into the taillights with three additional wires from the harness providing (something?).

I'm concerned about two things:
1) lack of a voltage stabilizer on the original setup.
2) the shape of the plug is very different from the plug on my Drawtite kit.
