Whine at idle-- just a soft, steady whine... 200 1989

Hello.
My '89 (automatic transmission) wagon whines audibly at idle occassionally. I notice it when I'm sitting at a light with the car in drive, brakes depressed, if that matters. It doesn't seem to be the case all the time, and I've learned that if I (just experimenting-- the whine isn't that bad) shift it into Neutral the whine stops.
This has bothered me on and off since shortly after we came into ownership of this otherwise great car four years ago. Is it low AT fluid? Is it maybe the brake pump working against Drive? Again, it doesn't seem to happen at all times, but when it's audible, it's rather annoying... well, like someone whining softly.
Any guesses? Should I be worried?
Thanks in advance.
