Robert Haire is right. The entire cluster as well as the speedo itself were redesigned in 1989 models.

Speedometers are electric from 1986, btw. There are three designs - 1986-88, 1989-91 and 1992-93 - which unfortunately look pretty similar but can't be exchanged. Use one out of the right group and check the Kxxxx number stamped on the face - there are different calibrations for alternative tire setups. 1992-93 speedos can also be sorted out by the way higher K number (four times the older ones, caused by a new sender setup for ABS equipped cars).
