Is the Flame trap necessary?

The breather system is necessary. Is the actual flame trap disc with holes in it needed? Probably not. I have never heard of any car igniting oil fumes and blowing apart it's crankcase. Theoretically, I guess it's possible.

In reality, well, the turbos didn't even use the flame trap disc, just the housing. If you want, that arrangement will be fine on your car. Keep the holder and all the hoses, and make sure the vacuum line and nipple are clear. You need this to keep the engine from developing pressure inside it, and blowing oil seals out.

A proper breather keeps you from blowing out the oil cap seal, the dipstick tube, the cam and crank seals, and the rear main seal. Excess pressure inside an engine is bad news.
