Distributor options 140-160

There must be some way to take bosch distributors from different
cars and make a decent B20 distributor. The air cooled VWs used an
almost identical distributor except it spins in another direction;
saabs and BMWs and mercedes benzes all used bosch ignition systems.
I can't believe that bosch made each of these things so unique that
you can't take a shaft from a VW, a body from a saab and a vacuum
advance unit from a BMW and come up with something that kinda works.
Does anyone have a bosch book that would give us cross references?
chris
