Installing a drawtite hitch wiring system 900

It looks easy, just run a hot wire down from the battery, hook the wires up the the appropriate tail lights. Very easy. Except for one thing. The Drawtite trailer end plug goes on the outside of the car. The kockout plate that volvo put in there uses a 3/4" neoprene gasket to keep out water. The Problem? The plug IPD-supplied tow hitch wiring kit is 1 1/2" wide. I can't possibly put it through the hole. The other end of the wires goes to the regulator. The only way to install it is to cut the brand new $40.00 wiring setup and re-splice it. Any ideas?
