Coolant temp sensor access 200 1984

Hello Board,

Car is an '84 245ti. Yesterday my wife complained that upon startup the idle rpm went to ~2500 and stuck there.

When she started driving around town, idle returned to normal.

I searched the Board yesterday and one (seemingly easy to check) possibility seems to be that the connection at the coolant temp sensor needs to be cleaned and/or the sensor needs to be replaced.

So the two questions are:

1) Do I need to pull the intake manifold to access the sensor/connection?

2) Any adivce as to other likely causes for high idle rpm?

Thanks,
Corey
