'Free' electrical work, ya get what ya pay for! 444-544

OK, so I probably would have fixed my horn wiring one day, but there's that button the previous owner installed under the dash, and it works, right? So I put the job off, not wanting to get into something that requires crawling under the car...

Then one of the mechanics who works at a very good auto repair shop (where I've had work done in the past) and lives just down the block offered to fix it for me. Never one to look a gift horse too closely in the mouth, I let him have at it. After all, it's just the horn wiring, right? *sigh*

So he gets done, we share a beer and talk about cars, and later I go out to drive to the store. After dark.

As soon as I reached the intersection by my house, I knew something was wrong. I turned on the right turn signal, but I saw light blinking on the LEFT front fender. I left the car running and hauled myself out. The right rear signal and left front signal were blinking...and when I flipped the lever the other way, the other two lights came on. So my rear turn signals worked OK, but the front ones were reversed.

Then I put my crutch against the brake pedal and watched the rear of the car. No brake lights! Acting on a hunch, I pressed the horn ring. No horn. I pressed the extra horn button under the dash - still no horn.

I've just spent the morning unwrapping a gob of elecrical tape I found hidden under the radiator overflow tank and installing a new wire block. At least I have turn signals that aren't confusing and the old horn button works again.

There's no power to the brake light switch, so I rigged that so it will work until I can track down the problem.

If I'd done the work myself to start with I would have saved myself time and effort...
