Fuel Tank: What's on the end of your pickup tube? 1800

So I removed the leaky gas tank from my 72ES this weekend to attempt to repair it. Before doing the initial clean of the tank I removed all the brass fittings including the plug on the bottom. I could see a gross looking rusty mass at the end of the pickup tube. I used a screwdriver to pry it carefully closer to the hole. and removed it with a pair of pliers. Its a cylindrical pre filter made of a mesh that fits over the end of the pickup tube. The thing is completely corroded and clogged, and its a wonder any gas was getting through.

Does anyone know where I can find a replacement part? Or would running an inline fuel filter between the tank and the pump accomplish the same thing?
