K-Jet running rich? 140-160 1974

My car runs on when I shut it off and it smells like it's running rich. Some evidence of tell-tale emissions that go away when the engine is hot. I don't want to wash the rings out, but I can't find the culprit. The cold-start injector doesn't appear to be leaking after it sprays for about the first 5 seconds. The other injectors seems to be dispersing a fairly uniform spray. Paper air filter is new and unobstructed. The only adjustment I know of is the NOX screw on the fuel distributor, which I think has nothing to do with this. I'm getting about 19 MPG averaged over all kinds of driving (auto trans soon to be replaced with an M41). Am I just imagining an over-rich running condition, or is this perhaps a prevalent problem with continuous mechanical fuel injection? I'd be grateful for any insight.
Thanks.
