NAV system - speed sensor signal 900

I plan to install my VDO NAV system in my 1995 965. It works better if it receives a pulsed signal proportional to speed. I recall from a shop manual that the speed sensor for the speedo is on the differential. I assume it's electric. Anyone with experience in tapping a nav system into this sender's wiring?
