Help guys I really need it, 700

I was cruising down the freeway and as I started up a hill I could fill the car loose power. Then it sounded like a piece of metal was flapping around under the hood. I took the next exit and when I got to the light it died. It started back up and I could still hear the chatter. I made it to a gas station and checked all the fluids. All are in tact. However it would not idle for long. I had it towed home and am getting ready to pull of the valve cover to see if any valves fell? or if all are accounted for. Is this a sign of a timing belt jumping a tooth? When I got it back to the apt I had to drive it around the complex to park it. It sounds like a diesal on roids. thanks in advance.
