intake manifold pressure? 200 1984

Hi all,

My car is an intercooled 1984 245glt with 203K miles and I'm just starting to try to learn how to work on it a little myself.

What is the valve-lookin-thing that comes off the top of the intake manifold runner closest to the firewall? The hose attached to it has popped off a couple of times in the past couple of months... both times at start-up first thing in the morning. Does this mean the pressure in the intake manifold is too high? What are the likely causes?

I'm planning to take the manifold off to examine/clean the coolant temp sensor connection because of a high-idle-at-startup issue. What other maintenance/cleaning stuff should I think about doing at this time?

Thanks in advance!
