'90 740 Crank Sunroof 700 1990

I have a '90 Volvo 740 GL with a hand-crank sunroof. It was working fine till now when I turn it to the sunroof direction. Today, it started to be weird - actually it's been doing that for some time. I would basically have to wrestle with it, here it crack and groan a little and basically continue sliding on/off. Today when I was sliding it on/off it was being particularly nasty.

Now, it closes - but not all the way, so I can't get the hand crank into the vertical 'click' position. Hence, i can't even turn it the vent direction. It just won't budge now, no matter how hard I try - and I don't want to break it.

Is there an easier fix than showing it to a mechanic? Maybe a how-to available online somewhere?
