axle nut and front wheel bearing+hub assembly 700

This weekend I replaced a number of front end components including the wheel bearing+hub assembly. I followed 2 sets of instructions; those in the haynes manual and those found on this site. Both made mention of an axle nut with either a crown washer/nut, cotter pin or other retention device. My car has no retention device. it appears to be simply a nut on the spindle. Is there a precaution that is to be taken with this assembly or system to prevent the nut from loostening and the wheel assembly from coming off while driving?
