turn signal question 140-160

My prior post was getting a little long...

I went to clean up the wiring in my 145 so as to prevent the likely
electrical fire that was hiding in it before. While I had it apart I
was planning on replacing the turn signal stalk mechanism with a newer,
slightly less worn out one.

I discovered, though, that the one that is in the 145 is totally
different from the one I pulled out of a later 140. The later one is
an enclosed mechanism with 4 contacts, the one on the car is an open
mechanism made of several stamped pieces of metal and it has 8 or so
contacts.

The earlier one is really quite worn out; can I replace the older one
with the newer one of I make several 1 to many spade connectors or are
they wired completely differently?
