240 Wiper Linkage Woes

Ok my '82 240 had finally tossed me a curveball I can't seemm to hit. The passenger's side wiper linkage has come adrift. Actually the wiper shaft became detached from the odd eccentric piece which is wrapped by the wiper linkage cables (splined part came out). After several hours struggling to put this thing back together I gave up. I should have known better after 10 minutes because I never could solve a Rubic's cube either.

Here's my question. What is the trick to putting this weird gizmo back together and should I put in a new (boneyard) wiper shaft assembly in first?

Why didn't volvo just use a wiper linkage like the rest of the world w/little ball joints and circlips?
