"Then, start the engine and connect the negative lead of your voltmeter to a "ground" and the positive lead to pin number 3 of the AMM connector."

This test should be conducted with the positive lead connected to the BACK of pin number three, with the harness connected to the air mass meter. There is a black plastic cover that you can pop off to access the terminals.
