Vacuum leaks. 200

Although the engine in my '89 240 runs good at high RPM and when accelerating, it kind of lopes around a little when idling. It’s not a nice even idle like you’d like to have. It doesn’t stall, but seems to be close at times.
Other than spraying the hoses with something like WD40 and watching for it to idle up, what are other means of checking for vacuum leaks?
I think I remember someone on the Board recommending using a piece of hose as a stethoscope to check for leaks around the intake manifold?
What would I listen for, and what other causes could there be for a loping idle?
Thanks.
