windshield wiper mechanism 200

The wipers on my '82 245 have begun to make an occasional rhythmic clicking in step with the sweep of the wipers. The noise comes from the driver's side and seems to originate under the dash at the long mechanism which transfers the motion of the wiper motor to the arms which actually move the wiper blades. Does gaining access to this mechanism require removing the dash? Is there a chance it's fixable or should I locate a whole replacement mechanism or just certain parts before I open it up? Any advice would be appreciated, as I'd like to minimize the time I have the dash off and the car out of commission.
Thanks for all your help!
