The "rubber coupling" is for the collapsing function. The u-joints were used on the 240, but the steering coloumb needs to be designed for it. My '71 144 rubber is still good, I suggest you stick with it. Those joints on my (previous car) '84 760 were worn out, and on my '88 240 they are not far away.
