Console switch needed with power antenna? 200

I am considering replacing the stationary antenna in my car with a power antenna. It appears that some cars with power antennas came with a switch in the dashboard that allowed the driver to roll down the antenna when not needed. Is this switch absolutely crucial for a power antenna, or will the antenna still function normally (i.e., go up when the radio is on and roll down when the radio/car is off)?

How does the switch work? Does it work by interrupting the power cable running out of the radio to the antenna, fooling the antenna into thinking the radio is off? How common are these switches, and how much should I pay for one?

If the switch is not needed, then I see little reason to get one. I can easily endure five minutes of silence if I have to turn off my radio when going through the automatic car wash.
