Very noisy after replacing starter. Flywheel damage guaranteed? 700 1991

Howdy. I just replaced a bad starter after having lots of rattling, followed by it humming without the flywheel turning.

It starts the car, but it makes a real noise though, is very hot, so something is obviously mechanically wrong.

I didn't see any broken or damaged teeth on the flywheel after taking off the old starter, but maybe I missed it.

It is possible that the starter gear wasn't completely meshed with the flywheel gear when I tightened it up, or am I destined to have to replace a damaged flywheel?

Any experiences or opinions welcomed.
