instrument cluster problems 200 1990

hello. i have a '90 240 DL Sedan, and my speedometer and odometer have quit working. i've tried everything, and finally bought a used cluster. however, my model is k10042, and i was sold a k9800. i initially had problems getting it to work, then it finally seemed ok. however, the next morning the odometer didn't work and the speedometer flys and remains all the way to the right. i can't figure this out. are these two models compatible, or do i need a k10042? or, could it be my connectors (although i've done a fairly thorough check)? much thanks to anyone who can help me solve this problem.
