Valve Lobe to Shim Clearances B21A Engine Questions 200 1981

Hello All,

Just for the heck of it and thanks to Cliff Pope, Trev, regarding Valve Stem Seals, I decided to do the job myself and save between $200 and $1500. I had taken (metric) measurements etc. and will make a tool, improved design . . .

While I had the Valve Cover off, I checked Cold Valve Lobe to Shim Clearances, because I paid the Volvo Dealership good money to Adjust the Clearances. My car never smoked until after they did the job. Coasting downhill to slow to a posted speed limit before going through a tunnel, it give a blast of grayish/blue smoke, when re-accelerating to the original speed limit, before the tunnel. I am pissed off, about their lack of responsiility or acknowledging they may have screwed up the job, but made all kinds of excuses why it smokes. I only have 151,794 kilometers (94,320 miles) on my 1981 244DL with its B21A engine and Zenith Stomberg Carburetor. That is not a lot.

What I found and would like to know if it is normal and what your opinions are regarding the following clearances:
Measured Cold Valve Clearanes:
#1 Exhaust .330mm, #1 Intake .406mm
#2 Exhaust .406mm, #2 Intake .356mm
#3 Exhaust .406mm, #3 Intake .381mm
#4 Exhaust .381mm, #4 Intake .381mm

I am just surpised they would vary so much.

I was also surprised by the accumulated lead deposits (gray) with gum in the recesses that do not receive Oil Flow.

Anyway, any ideas, information, opinions, etc. would be appreciated.
