If the system is too low on freon, a low pressure switch opens and the compressor will not come on. The switch is on the drier in the front right side of the car. You can jumper across this switch to see if the compressor will then engage. If it does, you are probably low on R12. If the compressor still will not engage, the ground wire to the compressor may be broken. The wire is down under the compressor and is black and hard to see BTDT.
