BW35, no clutch in Reverse? 140-160 1975

For no apparent reason, my 164 decided to stop running backwards. When engaging R, the reverse gear catches and the motor dies, like a manual without a clutch. I realize this tranny leaks like a sieve from the forward seal, but I have never had problems with it before this. The fluid level is correct and pink. Is it dead? In Drive, the rpms fall from 1500 to 550, but it manages to stay running.
What/where should I start looking first? The starter lockout also doesn't work, so that when I put it in reverse and engage the starter the car moves backward. Very helpful Saturday in a parking lot!

Thanks,
Klaus
