Power Window Relays?! 200 1990

Quick overview -- I have a 1990 240DL wagon.

My power windows are out of service, so I salvaged a new power window relay from the local dealer. Now here's the predicament: how do you get to it?!

I know it's located somewhere directly behind the key tray/air vents.

I pulled out the radio for starters. Then I unhinged the center console piece (with the a/c knobs, key tray, etc.) and leaned it forward. The ground wire connection looked solid. But I could not figure out how to get the vents out of the way. They're connected from behind by stiff plastic tubes, and didn't seem to want to budge. It seems removing them would be the key to accessing the relay. I even pulled out the instrument panel for a side approach, but no dice.

Similar experiences? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Cooking in the summer heat with closed windows,
Andy
