Mig welding, Just curious on your thoughts

For what it's worth I've done plenty of welding on VWs & Volvos without disconnecting either ECU or battery, and I'm sure I'll be chastised for it, but never have I had any problems. I figure that as long as the ground clamp is near enough to the weld site there's virtually no chance of frying the ECU. That being said, I've had so many recent problems with my 780's ECU (0 280 000 563) - mainly with finding a used one that works - that I'll probably observe the usual precautions about disconnecting what should be disconnected, to be absolutely sure that I'm not responsible for the death of the one working unit I finally found.
