auto transmission shifting poorly 200 1992

My 1992 240 sedan is equiped with an automatic transmission. It shifts hard at 20mph, the next shift is at 40-45mph, and the last is at 58-63mph. Sometimes if I let off the gas it will shift smoother and at a lower speed. The overdrive light never comes on as it is a push button on the shifter.
If I try to accelerate faster, the car will sometimes not upshift and appears to be rolling as if it were in nuteral. Has anyone else ever experienced this problem and how can I correct it ? I am not a mechanic nor are there any foriegn car garages around. Any help or advise would be appreciated. Thanks.
