b20 Assembly UPDATE 140-160 1974

Thanks all.

I was relieved to see I had the rods in the correct way when I got home last night. Rod numbers toward the oil filter and American curb, away from the thrust side.

The rings slipped on easily. The Deves box had "Rings may be slightly oversized" printed on the box. Std. size rings. They had <10 1/ks gap when fitted square in the bore. I filed them open to .016.

New scraper rings(2) came with a spacer for behind it, but there was no real room in the groove, so I left it out.

Original oil ring was a 1 piece, slotted, apparently steel ring. Replacement was a 4 piece, expander, separator, and 2 flat thin rings. Deves box comes with pretty good instructions. Scraper ring marked "TOP".

There is no oil hole in the rod.
The original rod bearings had a groove down the center with a hole as if for a rod oil hole. The replacements are a solid surface.

All bearing caps in place, snugged. I'm going to pump oil through the galleys and try to lube up all the journals to displace the assembly grease.

Fitted the cam, lifters and gears, but forgot the spacer, so the new (steel) cam gear comes off and the spacer goes in. Set the arp head studs. Today I'm getting a bunch of new bolts for things like the bronze thrust bearing and such.
