Reseting Service light on 240 1991 Need help, tried these ways: 200

Service engine light is still on, can't get it to turn off even when I:
1. Press in the button for 10 & 30 seconds on the far bottom right when Key is in switch notch II
2. Press in the button for 10 & 30 seconds on the far bottom right when Key is in switch notch III (when the car is on)
3. Press in the button when I turn the car on

If I unplug the battery for a certain amount of time, will this kill it? What am i doing wrong? Thanks.
