How to free a steering U-joint that's frozen to the shaft splines? 200 1991

I'm in the process of replacing the steering rack on a 91 240. The problem is that the pinion shaft on the rack can't be separated from the steering u-joint. Even tried loosening up the upper end of the u-joint and that's frozen to the male splines too. 4 hours of prying either of the two halves apart was no help either. Anyone had this problem before?
