How to polish the trim? and other fascinating exterior trim questions. 120-130

Time to put the wagon back together after the paint. As I looked at my trim it seems rattier than I remember. Who has tips on what to use on the SS and what to use on the (?) alloy (?).
Also, a bunch of the side strips were held on using white plastic clips instead of the twisted wire clips I'm used to on these cars. Is this the PO's gerry rig or did Volvo switch to something better after awhile? This is my youngest 120 ever so I get a little confused with all the new fangled stuff. I never liked the connection that the wire clips made, anyone have a brand name/ part # of something that works better?
Thanks as always for any tips/hints.
