car starts, but bogs down 700 1988

Hi all
Need some help for a friend of mine. He has a 88 740 sedan. He sent me an e-mail saying the car was starting fine, but the following was going on: "when running under load going out of
the driveway, it bogs down as if drowning or starving.
After patting the petal a couple of time, the motor
clears and is able to drive. Sometimes I have to reset
the negative cable before it works."
The in tank pump was replaced with new I think. The main pressure pump was replaced with a used one and the fuel filter was replaced. The cable part makes me think a ground problem, but the symptoms don't seem right for that. I am hoping someone here on the board with more experience can give me some ideas.
Thanks all
Ube
