Speedometer as unstable as Charles Manson 700 1986

My speedometer works fine sometimes;other times it just flops to the zero even when underway. It is an ADO (German) cluster. I've tried replacing the whole panel (Yazaki), but even an 87 Yaz will run the speedo fine, but then I have no fuel level indicator or bottom row ('idiot') lights.
anybody got any ideas?
I've been searching for an 86 ADO on eBay..no luck. I bought an 84 ADO,but the speedo was different.
sometimes it seems one can't win......
