Hesitation / Power Loss 200 1990

When running my 1990 wagon in town, about 30 MPH, perhaps accelerating slightly, there is occasionally a short hesitation, or sudden loss of power. My natural response is to depress the the accelerator hard, and it does not respond at all, just feels dead. This has only happened a few times to date, and the car has always recovered and never fully stalled, not yet. They other day it did this in a bad part of down, right in front of some gang looking dudes on the street. Thus, I am here to see if I can run the problem down before it leaves me stranded somewhere in indian country.
