89 240 trip meter reset button 200

the reset button on my trip meter came out from whatever holds it connected to the gears in the dash and i'm unable to get it to stay and/or back in position to mesh. the faqs deal mainly with broken gearing. the numbers continue to spin and register mileage, i just can't get it reset. what holds that button meshed to gears and is it easy ( as if anything with dash is easy) to fix.

thanks
gary c
