Thanks for your great advice. Now for the rest of the story. I did as you suggested and the wire that I used to ground the spade connector FRIED! Someone had taken a wire from the hot side of the fuse panel ran it through the firewall and into the wire harness. This must have been done to make the alternator charge even though the bulb was . So, I am back to your suggestion that the problem is at the bulb. However, when I read in the FAQ's about removing the speedo head on a 760 (John Sargent says don't do it if you don't have to.) I am wondering where I might find an easier way to solve the problem.
Getting to the bulbs from the back seems almost impossible unless I drop the steering column down with the four bolts I can see from below. My other idea is to locate what wire is feeding that bulb and swap it with some other indicator light (like bulb failure) and call it a day. The owner is game for whatever will work with the minimum amount of hassle. However this does not have a wiring schematic in any books that I own, so I need to know the color code. If I know where the right colored wire was that feeds the bulb and swap it with another of the unnecessary warning lights, I could have a functional system.
Let me know if you think I am crazy, (I can handle it) but there has to be a way.
