Why were the older 240 more fancy?

It seems as if there were a lot more 240 GL's back in the early to mid 80's then in the late to early 90's. Why is this? When I bought my 88, I wanted a GL but found a nice DL and added power windows and other GL niceities. Why did the GL become unpopular over the years? In looking at ebay, the newer GL's seem just like DL's no alloys or leather. I thought GL stood for "got leather"lol Thanks for any information and happy bricking.
