Why were the older 240 more fancy?

The original widow sticker on my 86 240GL has a MSRP of $18,100. With all the dealer add-ons, cruise, fog lights, center arm rest, radio and speakers, mats, tinting etc, ran the out the door price up to $19,440. A lot of money.
The original widow sticker from the new '78 VW Rabbit ( yep, I have kept that sticker too) bought 8+ years before was $4,747 MSRP, with an epa mileage rating of 25 city and 38 hwy.
