What to check on junkyard engine-B230 non-turbo 900 1993

I bought a junkyard engine out of a 93' 940 I am planning on putting in my froze 91' 740. The junkyard engine has been sitting inside at the junkyard for 6 years and has 88K miles on it. The junkyard said they have not pushed selling the engine because of all the crud in the valve cover. The former owner, who totalled the car, must not have changed oil much. It is a type L and has the oil squirters (yea!) which I saw last nite when I took the pan off. The compression tested at the junkyard was 185 to 190 on all cylinders. The cylinders look good from the pan side.

My questions are:
1) What should I check on the engine to determine what work needs to be done (what is a good wear indicator)? I would like to determine the condition of the engine while it is on the engine stand. I plan on replacing the 3 front seals, rear main seal, water pump, valve cover gasket, and pan gastket at a minimum.
2) Should I pull the head, remove the carbon, and replace the headgasket?
3) Any thoughts on seal manufacturers? I have used Elring but had a loose fit in the housing on a rear main I replaced a couple years ago. It seaped a little and I suspect it was the housing to seal fit that was the problem.
4) Are there good alternatives to Volvo pan and head gaskets?

Thanks
