If its a knocking that sounds like its coming from under the timing gear cover, the likelyhood that the timing gear is shot is very high... I'd say go ahead and tear it apart. You'll find a fiber cam gear under there that is probably coming loose from its steel hub. Not entirely uncommon, and beats the heck out of anything else that could make similar knocking noises...
