Faded Valeo taillights 700 1990

Any tips on restoring faded Valeo taillights? My 1990 740 is in great shape except for the taillights. They're a disgrace - faded & spider-cracked. I've tried buffing with rubbing compound, to no avail, and then resorted to 600-grit emery cloth. This improved things somewhat, especially when I followed it up with rubbing compound. Does anyone have a solution for this? And how do I keep them from fading again? (Will the regular taillights from earlier 740s fit, if all else fails?)
