panhard rod 200

I'm replacing the suspension bushings in my car mainly because everything sounded like it was loose while I was driving. After doing the rear control arm bushings and the torque rod bushings though - the car feels almost new.

I guess my question is - wha the hell does the panhard rod do, and what are the symptoms of failed panhard rod bushings.
